26 hours and 4 flights later, we landed in Cusco, Peru. 16 hours later, we were picked up in a van and off to our first trek: The Salkantay Trek. Salkantay Pass (15,213') is the highest point of our trek. Once we crest it we'll start heading down and in fact Wayra Lodge (our destination today) is about the the same elevation as Salkantay Lodge. This is the day where we will join to the classic Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu and we will see hikers going in the same direction as we are. After breakfast we are going to hike for 3 hours uphill to the highest point of the regular Salkantay trek, the Salkantay pass (4,650 m / 15,252 ft).

The Salkantay Route, also known as the “New Inca Trail”, is located north of the city of Cusco, following the Cusco - Limatambo - Abancay - Lima road, making a detour between Limatambo and Mollepata. Especially on the Salkantay Trek as we spent the first night and the second night pretty high (about 3800 meters both nights) and the combination of the elevation and tiredness prepared pretty rough times for some people in our group.
